Living The High Life

Every season designers come out with shoes more fabulous than seasons prior.  It’s almost a guarantee that the most eye-catching will come with a heel high enough that walking in them should be considered a talent.  So if you’re up for the challenge, London based designer Nicholas Kirkwood has created some worthy footwear.

Not often does a shoe come along with architecture so aesthetically pleasing that it’s bound to leave any onlooker in awe.  Awe… which is quickly followed by intimidation from the 5.5 inch heel supporting these creations.  Not only are these heels over the top in height, but the price is just as steep (from $995 to $2000).

In a world where price is not an issue would an amazing pair of stilettos such as these be worth the pain?  A doctor would probably say no, and for good reason since high heels are known for causing foot and back problems.  Stilettos are not referred to as killer heels without reason; shoes like these aren’t made for everyday wear and tear.  For many of the fashion obsessed it’s the heel that makes the shoe, and the word practical is not part of their vocabulary.  For me a few hours in an unpractical pair of heels is worth it if they can transform an outfit from cute to fierce.   I can not begin count the many times I have gone out in a pair of super high and less than comfortable heels.  Halfway through the night my mind would be set on sneaking off somewhere so I could secretly take them off.  You would think that I’d learn my lesson, but needless to say a day or two later déjà vu with another pair of heels equally as high and glam.   I can still hear my mom saying “pain is beauty”.  I do not think this is always the case but sometimes it is, and for some people it’s worth it.

Of course skyscraping heels are not for everyone.  There are definitely many shoes, flat and low heeled, which when paired with the right outfit will make a lovely ensemble.  But as a dedicated consumer in the fashion world it has always been obvious to me that the best looking shoes usually come with a higher heel.   Case and point, Nicholas Kirkwood’s collection that is in stores now.   I’d say these shoes are the one frenemy I welcome with open arms.

I love it! I need to find that perfect heel that I can wear all day. :-)
